Frequently asked questions

My spouse/partner/daughter/friend is coming along with me, but they are just along for the ride. Do they also have to register and pay 125$?


Yes. The registration fee includes catered meals, whose cost is already subsidized by grant money and whose amount must be planned in advance. Every person staying on campus and/or joining us for meals or receptions must register and pay for the conference.




Will alcohol be served?


Each registered attendee will receive a ticket for 1 glass of beer or wine per evening meal or reception in their registration packet. If you think you might wish for more than one drink, or if you wish to be able to offer drinks to other people, you may purchase additional tickets in advance (this option appears on the registration page) for 5$ each and we will include them in your registration packet. We will be serving regional wines and beers at the event. Because of our non-profit status, we cannot sell alcohol to you during the actual event.




Are the bathrooms really co-ed in Stanton hall?


Toilets and showers are individual but not attached to the rooms. Sinks are public and co-ed. As the double rooms are intermingled with the single rooms in Stanton Hall, it is not possible to designate completely unisex areas.




I prefer to travel in my RV. Are there hookups?


Whitman College has no facilities for RV camping. Walla Walla Fairgrounds are located two miles from the campus and offer RV parking with full power and water hookups for 25$ per night. Contact the fairgrounds directly to make your reservation, and tell them you are attending the Francophone Northwest History conference – they will try to group everyone together.

What is included in the dorm lodging?


Provided: a double bed with sheets, a towel, a pillow, and a washcloth

Not provided: a fan, an iron, an alarm clock, clothes hangers, an extra pillow, an extra towel, a bath robe, reading lamp and extension cord, soap, and shampoo. Additional linens (pillow or towel) are sometimes available, depending on demand.

If you need fresh linens daily, a television in your room, or a private bath, you might prefer to stay in a nearby hotel instead.




What should I wear?


Average high/low temperatures for the third week of June in Walla Walla are 79 / 57 degrees F. Rain is possible but unlikely; humidity is low. We advise you check the weather forecast and pack accordingly. Some presenters dress in business casual attire; other presenters and most non-presenters simply dress comfortably for the climate. The banquet will not require different clothes from your normal wear for the day.




How much walking will there be?


The campus is small, and we will be concentrated in one area. The total minimum amount of walking per day will be approximately one mile (~2100 steps). We will also have golf carts available and will be happy to give rides between buildings. If you choose to stay in a hotel and do not have a car, add two miles per day to the minimum total walking distance.




Will there be music?


We hope so! Stanton Hall has a lovely patio and common area, including a large piano. If you play an instrument, we hope you’ll bring it along and share.




I prefer to stay in a hotel. Is there a conference rate?


We have reserved a small block of rooms at the Courtyard Marriott in Walla Walla for the duration of the conference. The special rate for conference guests is 96$ per night. This rate does not include taxes, fees, or breakfast. The Marriott offers an airport shuttle to Walla Walla airport. They will also provide shuttle service to Whitman campus with advance notice. The Marriott is located 1 mile from campus, at 550 West Rose Street Walla Walla, WA. The Marriott will honor the conference rate up until May 20 if there are rooms available, even if the number of rooms requested exceeds what we have set aside. Can a couple willing to share a double bed reserve and share a single room, for the single room rate?


No. Unfortunately, fire code requires that we reserve the larger double rooms for two people. Also, the room rate includes breakfast–one breakfast is included in the single room rate, and two breakfasts are included in the double room rate.




Is there an airport shuttle from Pasco to Walla Walla?


The Grapeline service runs three times a day between Pasco airport, Whitman College, and Walla Walla airport, and is a good option when it matches your flight times. Travel time is only a small bit longer than driving a personal vehicle. https://grapeline.us/travel-center/schedule/ If you are staying at the Marriott hotel, there is a free shuttle to and from the Walla Walla airport, and shuttle service to Whitman campus can also be arranged.




I plan to fly. What airport should I use?


Walla Walla airport (ALW) is just 10 minutes away from the town and college, but has only three flights a day. All Walla Walla flights go to/come from Seattle. Pasco airport (PSC) is located an hour's drive from Walla Walla. It is a slightly larger airport, and prices are sometimes, but not always, more reasonable. Pasco also offers flights to Denver, Salt Lake, and Minneapolis, which can shorten the path for visitors from the east.




Is there parking on campus?


Free parking is available in campus lots and on the streets immediately surrounding the campus. Please respect "Reserved" and "Handicap" indications. RV parking is not available.




Can I bring my pet?


Only registered service animals are permitted in campus buildings, and only with prior approval. Please contact us if you have a service animal.




What is your refund policy?


With the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, people are understandibly concerned about what happens if they are unable to travel, or if the conference is cancelled because of the virus. If the conference is canceled, we will refund everyone's registration fees. If an event or workshop is canceled by the Conference Committee, participants will receive a full refund for that event (this is mainly about the Tamástslikt tour). If the conference takes place, and you cancel by June 10, 2020, we will refund your registration minus a 20$ processing fee. Unfortunately, we cannot refund your registration through the wix site. We will have to send you a check. Requests for refunds received after the June 10 deadline may be approved by the Conference Co-chairs at their discretion. The deadline for refund requests is the last possible date we can change orders for catering, etc. here, to avoid incurring refunded costs. We have changed this date from June 1.
